1. Relief pitcher Darren O’Day was claimed on waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. O’Day was limited to 16 appearances for the Rangers in 2011 because of injuries. His record was 0-1 with an 5.40 ERA in 16-1/3 innings. In 2010, he was an integral part of the Rangers’ bullpen with a 6-2 record and 2.03 ERA in 72 games (62 innings).
2. The Rangers also announced that five players cleared waivers and were outrighted. They are Eric Hurley, Merkin Valdez, Omar Beltre, Andres Blanco and Esteban German. The Rangers’ 40-man roster has now been reduced to 32 players.
3. Third baseman Adrian Beltre was named the third base Silver Slugger Award Wednesday for the second consecutive year. It is the third time he has won the award. He earned the award on the basis of a .296 batting average, 32 home runs, 105 runs batted in and 82 runs scored.
4. All Ranger coaches have been invited back for the 2012 season. Pitching coach Mike Maddux however has been rumored to be a candidate for at least two of the three vacant managerial jobs - St. Louis, Boston and the Chicago Cubs.
